The Honeybee Philosophy
Honeybee Pre-K provides a nature-based learning environment that focuses on Outdoor Education, Arts Enrichment, Flow-Learning, Inquiry-based Teaching, Hands-on Experience and Play! While multiple learning models are incorporated into the curriculum, the Forest Kindergarten emergent curriculum is the most prominent.
Outdoor learning encourages awareness and respect for the surrounding world. It teaches understanding of the earth and how things work. Children are encouraged and guided as they explore, discover, and learn to problem solve on their own. When children are given the freedom to express themselves and to approach learning in a way that suites them, they develop great self-confidence and self-esteem. Anxiety about the unknown diminishes while curiosity and the courage to try new things excels.
At Honeybee Nature School the Flow-Learning approach gives children the chance to discover their likes, dislikes, and their own unique learning styles and personalities. I have found that flexibility inspires creativity and a strong motivation to learn. When a child discovers a passion or interest in something, that is the time to pursue it and to encourage them! The day to day curriculum is developed based on the children in the program and the group dynamic. The curriculum is always changing and developing as the passions and curiosities of the children unfold.
Learning outdoors also gives us a sense of freedom, space, and a feeling that anything is possible. The positive energy that we can draw from the earth is undeniable. Sometimes we forget just how big the world is when we are surrounded by walls. At HNS children are taught respect for the earth and all living things. This is so important because it empowers children to have a deep sense of respect for themselves and for others.
We spend everyday outside, rain, shine or snow. A little bit of water and mud doesn’t keep us from learning and experiencing the world! As we all know, the winters can get cold here in Utah so we must prepare for this! Children love to play in the snow and there are never ending things to experience in the natural world as the seasons change. Preparing for all types of weather requires the appropriate gear and attitudes. On days when the weather may seem unfavorable to most, we typical have the most fun and are presented with learning opportunities that we would otherwise miss out on while staying indoors.
