Nature Kindergarten’s Integrated Curriculum

Honeybee Nature School’s Integrated Curriculum brings meaning to each academic subject by incorporating and combining academic lessons with nature immersion, play, exploration, social interaction, and daily life. Weather permitting, all lessons take place outdoors at school or in the nearby mountains. This Integrated and Hands-on learning style promotes creativity, confidence, problem solving skills, real world application. This supports an understanding of how we can apply academic skills to everyday life which in turn provides a meaningful motivation for children to desire to learn more.

The Honeybee curriculum will draw from various sources to ensure that the program provides a holistic and full learning experience for its students. Some of the sources include Investigations Math Curriculum, Utah Educational Core Standards, Growing up Wild Curriculum, Forest Kindergarten learning philosophies, and Project Learning Tree Environmental Education Program.

OUR MISSION

Honeybee Nature School connects children to themselves, to each other, and to their nature world through studying both the natural and human environments. We utilize an integrated academic and social curriculum that immerses children in their educational context in a deeply experiential way. Our mission is to create curious, creative, and loving children who are becoming confident in their learning and who actively strive to improve the world that surrounds them.

What is Place-Based Education?

Place-Based Education is learning that stems from what is local. According to David Sobel, author of Place-Based Education: Connecting Classrooms and Communities (2004), Place-Based Education “is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in reading and other language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, the arts and other subjects across the curriculum.” This is the basis for teaching and learning at Honeybee Nature School.

Place-Based Education

  • Takes place on-site in the school yard, and in the local community and environment.
  • Learning focuses on local themes, systems, and content.
  • Learning is personally relevant to the learner.
  • Learning experiences contribute to the community’s vitality and environmental quality.
  • Learning includes all academic subjects through interdisciplinary work.
  • Promotes connection, respect, and love for one’s place.
