The Honeybee Philosophy
Honeybee Pre-K provides a nature-based learning environment that focuses on Outdoor Education, Arts Enrichment, Flow-Learning, Inquiry-based Teaching, Hands-on Experience and Play! While multiple learning models are incorporated into the curriculum, the Forest Kindergarten emergent curriculum is the most prominent. |
Outdoor learning encourages awareness and respect for the surrounding world. It teaches understanding of the earth and how things work. Children are encouraged and guided as they explore, discover, and learn to problem solve on their own. When children are given the freedom to express themselves and to approach learning in a way that suites them, they develop great self-confidence and self-esteem. Anxiety about the unknown diminishes while curiosity and the courage to try new things excels.
At Honeybee Nature School the Flow-Learning approach gives children the chance to discover their likes, dislikes, and their own unique learning styles and personalities. I have found that flexibility inspires creativity and a strong motivation to learn. When a child discovers a passion or interest in something, that is the time to pursue it and to encourage them! The day to day curriculum is developed based on the children in the program and the group dynamic. The curriculum is always changing and developing as the passions and curiosities of the children unfold.

Cheyanne: My dad thought of himself as a mountain man, he was a hunter and so I spent a lot of time camping and hiking as I grew up. It was a passion he attempted to share with his children. The first squirrel I shot sent me into tears and sorrow for days. Guilty and regretful, I learned the hard way that hunting was not my sport. I shared a love and respect with the animals as my dad did, but I much preferred to see them thriving and alive. A made up dinner plate was no match for the beauty and grace of the deer as he bounds over the mountain. Last year I joined a volunteer abroad program to go live in China and teach English to Kindergartners. It was an eye-opening experience. I found a fascination with young minds and wondered why I had never considered teaching before. A month after my return I joined the Utah Conservation Corp. We did invasive species removal in the Canyons of Escalante for 3 months. I learned what conservation was and how it worked. I learned how to backpack and had a community experience like nothing I’d had before. I moved to Ogden shortly after. I enjoy hiking the many trails along the east bench of the city. While hiking, I found a flyer for Honeybee Nature School. I loved the idea and felt inspired to contact the school. It perfectly combined my experience the previous year and it fit so perfectly as the next step in my adventure. I’ve spent a some time at the school and I have fallen in love with the children and the environment, Julie is inspiring and I look forward to sharing their great company!
